Research Interests

Arachnida (Araneae, Scorpiones and Solifugae), biodiversity inventories, systematics and evolution, community ecology, population ecology and teaching of zoology.
 
Current Research Projects

- Biodiversity Inventory of Selected Groups of Invertebrates of the Brazilian Semiarid – PPBio Semiárido.
The Brazilian Semiarid is one of the most unknown region of the country and harbors a unique fauna, composed of hundreds of undescribed invertebrate taxa, including families, genera and species. This projects aims to provide an overview of the species richness of numerous invertebrate taxa, including spiders, scorpions, harvestman, sun-spiders, termites, butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, fruit flies, praying mantis and mosquitoes, among others, from the Brazilian Semiarid. Besides, the description of new taxa and the continuous formation of new researchers are also objected.

- Local determinants of the arthropod fauna in a semiarid region in northeastern Brazil.
What does determine the arthropod species richness and composition on a specific locality? The aim of this project is to analyze a large number of biotic and abiotic variables and the arthropod species richness and composition, searching for robust positive or negative relations. Then, if any of the variables measured could explain the diversity pattern observed, it would be possible to preview the impact on the arthropod fauna owing to anthropogenic impact in natural environments, such as clear cutting or firing. The experiment is going to be conducted in a 500 ha farm, inside a 25 ha area, subdivided into 16m² plots. Forty five plots (three sampling expeditions of fifteen plots) will be sorted randomly, where a protocol of arthropod, soil and vegetation structure sampling will be carried out. The sampling expeditions will be carried out in the driest season of the area, during the raining season and after the raining season to sample this variation. The variables measured are: herb biomass, bush and arboreal biomass, total biomass, canopy cover, dead vegetation mass, plant species richness, soil composition (in relation to sand and clay proportions), percentage of specific elements (Fe, Ca, Zn, K) in the soil, soil granulometry, soil temperature and soil moisture.
